Borrowing your Tithe

By Kenneth Tamara

As Christians, if we are going to be honest with ourselves, we have had times when emergencies popped up, and we over spent one way or another. And when the paycheck comes in, we are faced with a dilemma - pay our tithe, and be left with unpaid bills, or pay bills and skip on tithe. Some people choose the former, and call up the agencies owed to make payment arrangements; others choose the latter and explain it away that God will understand that they had to pay their bills. Most preachers, teach that no matter what, you must pay your tithe, even at the risk of your light being cut off, or car being repossessed. That seems kind of harsh and cruel, as if God is a task master, concerned only with getting his! What exactly does the bible say though?

"And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s. It is holy to the LordIf a man wants at all to redeem any of his tithes, he shall add one-fifth to it. And concerning the tithe of the herd or the flock, of whatever passes under the rod, the tenth one shall be holy to the Lord" - Leviticus 27:30-32

According to this scripture, you can borrow the tithe, but you have to pay back with interest (a fifth part, which is 20%). Some people have misinterpreted "a 5th part" as 5%, but if you do your math, thats 20%. The Living Bible translation explains it better:

“One-tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain from the fields or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord and must be set apart to him as holy. If you want to buy back the Lord’s tenth of the grain or fruit, you must pay its value, plus 20 percent. Count off every tenth animal from your herds and flocks and set them apart for the Lord as holy

Tithes can be borrowed and paid back with interest. Why don't preacher teach this truth? Are we scared that people will start borrowing their tithes every other month? Teach the truth, and believe people will behave responsibly and faithfully. If you find yourself in a bind, it is not an excuse to skip paying your tithe. Do what you have to do with the money, but recognize that you owe the tithe, plus 20%.

Another scripture that came to mind is Matt 15:5-8

But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: ‘These people honor me with their lips,  but their hearts are far from me.

Although this scripture is not talking about tithes, however money that can be used to fulfill one's responsibilities cannot be "devoted to God" to escape fulfilling one's responsibilities.

  4. To redeem means to buy something back. Not to borrow something. Just like we've been redeemed by the blood of Christ, we've been legally purchased by Jesus, not borrowed. In the same way, what this passage is saying is if you want to buy back the tithe (which is never money by the way), you may do so by paying the cash value of the item plus 20%. Therefore, this scripture has nothing to do with borrowing your tithe neither does it have anything to do with paying them late.

    1. I was wondering this as well. What are your thoughts on paying tithe late? If you are months behind, is it better to just catch up or to ask for forgiveness and start over?

  5. Not taking anything from your reply but just thought I would put the definition of Redeem here.

    re·deem

1.compensate for the faults or bad aspects of (something).
    2. gain or regain possession of (something) in exchange for payment.

  7. That scriptures says: "If a man wants at all to redeem any of his tithes, he shall add one-fifth to it." Money wasn't even spoken of here. So what can we say about that? I think if money wasnt really a tithing item then, and it is now, then we can appropriate it.I also think we should just accept the humble explanation provided here....personally whether we tithe or we don't doesn't detract from us the love God has for us. It only shows that we are committed to him in all things. I accept this explanation and will apply it accordingly. But I also believer we teach the benefits of tithing. I have been a faithful tither for 10years and God has been faithful. I spent my tithes a few times when I had no hope....for example in 2012 my dad fell sick and I needed to deposit in the hospital. God mercy me...I havent paid that back I hope to but with this teaching I know start planning to repay.

  8. So how do we calculate the late tith. If my original tith is $161.06 then how do I add my 20%

    1. 161.06x.2= 32.212,
Now add like this to get the gross payback; 161.06+32.212, which now equals to 193.272

    1. I thank my God for His Revelations. True love and care for the disadvantaged are one. Christ Jesus condemns merciless Christianity with obliged tithing.

Also, there is money you got from a mission you didn't expect as was given by Abraham to Melkizedech, pay from gross. Otherwise the from transaction, say salary, profits, bonuses, commissions, dividents and as the Spirit may lead be tithed.

  10. Thanks for the info. It is very helpful. Is there any verse from the new testament that discusses about borrowing of tithe?

  11. Am I paying my tithe + 20% of the tithe amount or my salary amount?

  12. I don't quite understand. If I am going thru a hardship and my tithe is $500 and I don't pay it, then when I "repay" it, I now have to give $500 plus $1000? Or just 20% ($1000)? But that would be harder to pay back if it was for hardship purposes, right? Someone, please explain. Thanks

    1. I just read the scripture and my interpretation of it is that we are to payback 20% of its value. So if my tithe is $500 then add 20% ($100) of my tithe's value. Is this correct?

  14. This is a great discussion. I too believe that the 20% is 20% of the actual tithe. So if my tithes is $100.00. My final full tithe at late payment will be $100.00 plus 20% of $100.00 making it $120.00 for God will truly replenish our faithfulness. Stay bless.

  17. I've always been afraid of borrowing my tithe even in extreme hard times, since I don't know if there are consequences attached to borrowing it. Now, I'm at peace. Thanks for sharing your spiritual knowledge.

  18. If indeed you pay your tithe with faith and believe that God will bless you, there is no need of borrowing what belongs to God. No matter how hard it might be God respect His word more than His name. read Isaiah 17:10-16

No matter how hard it might be God respect His word more than His name. The book of Malachi 3:10-12 says "Bring ye all the tithes....if I will not open you the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it... " please let read Isaiah 17:10-16 to see the kind of faith that this woman exercise.

  20. What if you only borrow part of your tithe? Do you pay the 20% on just the borrowed part or on the whole tithe?

    1. 20 didive it by 100= 0.2
      0.2 x 2890.00 =578
So when paying your tithe you'll get 2890 plus 578 =3468
      Another way to calculate it
      I divide it by 5=0.2
      0.2 multiply it by 2890.00 =578

  26. This teaching and comments and examples really helped me a lot since I was curious about redeeming my tithe since my business didn't do well and I have a choice to either pay my tithe and have no stock or redeem my tithe and have a stock for my business.
