"You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments" - Ex 20:4-6
Some really poignant things are veiled in these verses:
1. The instruction is clear and direct. Nothing in all creation, no matter whatever form it comes in, should replace God in having our devotion that is due him. In this 21st century, several things seem to have more of our adulation and devotion than God (which is worship basically) - celebrities, fame, wealth, career, sports, SEX, pleasure, revelry, the list is endless.
2. God is a jealous God. Thanks to Jesus for pacifying the wrath of God at the cross on Calvary, yet it doesn't change who God is. Probably not the kind of statement you want to read about God, but his jealousy is justified. If you invest immensely in someone, and they turn around and offer their devotion unreservedly to some hustler on the side, any sane minded person will be jealous. Every time we prostitute our devotion for God to something else, we hurt him. He has invested the very best in us, the life of his son; yet he's left on the sideline while we bastardize ourselves with other gods of our making and choice.
3. Generational curses. The sin of a father can have consequences up to the third and fourth generation. When it comes to alcoholism and abuse, we can readily understand this, yet there is the spiritual aspect of sin or iniquity. Some things done have set a spiritual foundation that affect up to the 3rd and 4th generation. Some perversions and dysfunctions we are born with are fruits manifesting from iniquities and covenants of foreparents. Thank God that thru Christ every curse can be broken; but life outside Christ can be so dire and abysmal, leaving you to battle issues you did not even create but were born with.
4. Generational blessings. Yes, God can show his love to a thousand generations! He did say he allows the sun to shine on the just and unjust. The only catch however is, for God's love to freely work in our lives and break strongholds and produce his blessings in us, we have to be in agreement and submission to it. We cant be in direct rebellion to the first instruction he gave (making him the Lord of our lives, and giving him our devotion) and expect his love to freely work in our lives, and break strongholds and issues. Disobedience and rebellion is simply reinforcing a curse we have already been delivered from thru Christ!
Call on Jesus right now; Repent of your rebellion and disobedience; Receive the mercy, forgiveness and love of God RIGHT NOW. He can break the influence and consequences of unknown iniquity from your generational lineage that might be influencing you; and you have the choice to not lay the foundation for a generational curse to affect your offspring.
