Light in Darkness

By Kenneth Tamara

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it" - John 1: 5

The normal thing for people to do is when they have an issue in their life, they hide it from God and attempt to fix it. If you could fix it, you would have done that a long time ago. Instead of trying to fix it on your own, invite God into your mess. When light comes into darkness, it flees! So whatever you struggle with, invite God in the struggle - addiction, habit, relationships, situations, etc. While you are in it, introduce God in it. He's not coming in to condemn or judge you; he's coming in to break the power of sin.

"A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out" - Is 42:3

Jesus did not come to whip you into shape in your weakness or struggle. In your frailty he would not wound you. Rather he would bind up your wounds and assist you to stand and help you out. That is his ministry as our High Priest making intercession for us since he understands what living in this flesh is like.
Invite Jesus into your mess to clean you up

Generational Blessing or Curse from a Jealous God?

By Kenneth Tamara

"You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments" - Ex 20:4-6

Some really poignant things are veiled in these verses:

1. The instruction is clear and direct. Nothing in all creation, no matter whatever form it comes in, should replace God in having our devotion that is due him. In this 21st century, several things seem to have more of our adulation and devotion than God (which is worship basically) - celebrities, fame, wealth, career, sports, SEX, pleasure, revelry, the list is endless.

2. God is a jealous God. Thanks to Jesus for pacifying the wrath of God at the cross on Calvary, yet it doesn't change who God is. Probably not the kind of statement you want to read about God, but his jealousy is justified. If you invest immensely in someone, and they turn around and offer their devotion unreservedly to some hustler on the side, any sane minded person will be jealous. Every time we prostitute our devotion for God to something else, we hurt him. He has invested the very best in us, the life of his son; yet he's left on the sideline while we bastardize ourselves with other gods of our making and choice.

3. Generational curses. The sin of a father can have consequences up to the third and fourth generation. When it comes to alcoholism and abuse, we can readily understand this, yet there is the spiritual aspect of sin or iniquity. Some things done have set a spiritual foundation that affect up to the 3rd and 4th generation. Some perversions and dysfunctions we are born with are fruits manifesting from iniquities and covenants of foreparents. Thank God that thru Christ every curse can be broken; but life outside Christ can be so dire and abysmal, leaving you to battle issues you did not even create but were born with.

4. Generational blessings. Yes, God can show his love to a thousand generations! He did say he allows the sun to shine on the just and unjust. The only catch however is, for God's love to freely work in our lives and break strongholds and produce his blessings in us, we have to be in agreement and submission to it. We cant be in direct rebellion to the first instruction he gave (making him the Lord of our lives, and giving him our devotion) and expect his love to freely work in our lives, and break strongholds and issues. Disobedience and rebellion is simply reinforcing a curse we have already been delivered from thru Christ!

Call on Jesus right now; Repent of your rebellion and disobedience; Receive the mercy, forgiveness and love of God RIGHT NOW. He can break the influence and consequences of unknown iniquity from your generational lineage that might be influencing you; and you have the choice to not lay the foundation for a generational curse to affect your offspring.

Borrowing your Tithe

By Kenneth Tamara

As Christians, if we are going to be honest with ourselves, we have had times when emergencies popped up, and we over spent one way or another. And when the paycheck comes in, we are faced with a dilemma - pay our tithe, and be left with unpaid bills, or pay bills and skip on tithe. Some people choose the former, and call up the agencies owed to make payment arrangements; others choose the latter and explain it away that God will understand that they had to pay their bills. Most preachers, teach that no matter what, you must pay your tithe, even at the risk of your light being cut off, or car being repossessed. That seems kind of harsh and cruel, as if God is a task master, concerned only with getting his! What exactly does the bible say though?

"And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s. It is holy to the LordIf a man wants at all to redeem any of his tithes, he shall add one-fifth to it. And concerning the tithe of the herd or the flock, of whatever passes under the rod, the tenth one shall be holy to the Lord" - Leviticus 27:30-32

According to this scripture, you can borrow the tithe, but you have to pay back with interest (a fifth part, which is 20%). Some people have misinterpreted "a 5th part" as 5%, but if you do your math, thats 20%. The Living Bible translation explains it better:

“One-tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain from the fields or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord and must be set apart to him as holy. If you want to buy back the Lord’s tenth of the grain or fruit, you must pay its value, plus 20 percent. Count off every tenth animal from your herds and flocks and set them apart for the Lord as holy

Tithes can be borrowed and paid back with interest. Why don't preacher teach this truth? Are we scared that people will start borrowing their tithes every other month? Teach the truth, and believe people will behave responsibly and faithfully. If you find yourself in a bind, it is not an excuse to skip paying your tithe. Do what you have to do with the money, but recognize that you owe the tithe, plus 20%.

Another scripture that came to mind is Matt 15:5-8

But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: ‘These people honor me with their lips,  but their hearts are far from me.

Although this scripture is not talking about tithes, however money that can be used to fulfill one's responsibilities cannot be "devoted to God" to escape fulfilling one's responsibilities.

The Wisdom of God

By Kenneth Tamara

If you read the Book of Proverbs, you find Wisdom being personified as a person, constantly calling out and asking the simple to come to the feast she is hosting.
Knowledge is the first step, while wisdom is the second. Yet it seems we have focused all our attention and might on acquiring knowledge, and settled there. Any half serious Christian who reads their bible regularly has a sufficient amount of the knowledge of God - they can quote and post scriptures, and probably exceptionally well too. However a whole lot lack the wisdom of God (me included).

Wisdom is the application of acquired knowledge, so the wisdom of God is the application of the word of God (the knowledge of God). As a Christian, when you begin to apply and live by the word of God faithfully in your everyday life, that is when you are ushered into the wisdom of God.

"The  fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding" - Pro 9:10

Living a lifestyle that is in complete reverence of God is the genesis, that access point into the wisdom of God. It is the gateway. So that means, living a lifestyle that takes advantage of God's grace (sin consciously because there is grace, and you can ask for repentance later) denies you access into the wisdom of God, since the very first requirement for access is the fear of the Lord. Likewise, putting self first and relying on your own strength and effort, instead of putting God first and relying on the finished work of Christ at Calvary (which is a demonstration of trusting in yourself and not trusting God), is a stance that will deny you access into the wisdom of God.

The knowledge of God through his word comes from studying the word faithfully, and there is a blessing in that. But the wisdom of God only comes by living out this acquired knowledge. One can teach and expound great deep and revealing truths, but until one is faithfully living out this acquired knowledge, access into living out the wisdom of God in ones life is denied.

BENEFITS OF HAVING THE WISDOM OF GOD

Wisdom is being able to make excellent, beneficial, profitable and meaningful decisions and choices based on acquired knowledge. That in itself is a blessing. But the wisdom of God is more. It's an anointing, an endowment, a gift, a grace from God to know exactly what to do in every situation, circumstance and opportunity we encounter. You may not 100% obey every expectation of the word of God in your life, but the fact that you have chosen to live in the fear of the Lord committedly positions you to access the wisdom of God

- Living an honorable and rich life
("With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity" - Pro 8:18)

- A lifestyle that exudes a right standing with God; established in wealth; having a full and stable bank account
("I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice, bestowing wealth on those who love me and making their treasuries full" - Pro 8:20&21)

- Long life and prosperity
("My son do not forget my teaching but keep my commands in your heart for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity" - Pro 3:1&2)

- Good health and protection from sickness and disease
("Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones" - Pro 3:7&8)

- Protection as you travel daily in life; keeping you from stumbling
("My son preserve sound judgement and discernment, do not let them out of your sight; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet" - Pro 3:21-24)

- Living a life of victory over sin and every trial thrown at us
("For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless" - Pro 2:6&7)

I can go on and on unveiling the blessings that having the wisdom of God will unleash in your life. As spiritual as we all may get, we all have needs and requirements in this world. From bills and financial needs, to desires in our heart aching for expression and fulfillment in God, most of them requiring some form of finance or another. Living in daily application of the knowledge of God we have acquired in the beginning of being set free to live out our purpose and destiny.

Living in daily reverence of God is the beginning of accessing the all knowing Wisdom of God.

Dealing With Masturbation

By Kenneth Tamara

Okay, I know this is not a topic that most would prefer we discuss, however after a series of personal emails from folks, and after praying about it, here I am sharing this. And this is gonna be a practical expression, not some religious blah blah blah. We are adults here, so we can discuss adult issues with integrity.

- HONESTY: The first thing is being honest with oneself that giving in to masturbation is giving in to defeat in an area in one's life. The world has expressed how "normal" and acceptable it is. The world also claims how normal and acceptable pre-marital sex is, as well as other clear violations of morality, so as a christian, the world should not be where we find definition for moral standard. Matt 5:28 "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart". I'm sure as anyone who has indulged in masturbation can attest, it is the lustful fantasy that enhances the process. Subtract the fantasy, and it becomes a tasking labor requiring too much work. In my effort at trying to compromise, I wanted to keep masturbation, so I subtracted the fantasysing, and it worked for a while, but it was so much mental work trying to keep the mind from straying, knowing fully well that one or two mental images or visits down memory lane would make the process magical. And even if one is able to masturbate without mental images, the act of sexual orgasm outside of marriage depletes the anointing from manifesting practically in one's life. The power of the gospel at work in a person's life is relegated to the background, and the christian claims becomes a nice rhetoric with no anointing backing it up.We have to be honest with ourselves and admit that sin is sin. As long as we justify or defend it, then we empower it.

- BELIEVE: We have to dare to believe that it is possible to live above masturbating. I've heard people joke that zero release of any form will lead to sexual implosion, or the body would catch toxic sexual fever. As long as our theology imbibes that sexual expression is a need, then it would be impossible to live a life of sexual purity. Gal 5:19 "The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery". Impurity is a sin. The state of being defiled is a compromise in our holiness walk. 1 Cor 6:11 "And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God". Before Christ, we lived impure lives, but after our encounter with him, he washed, sanctified and justified us. Now all we need to do is to begin to see ourselves in that state. We have to believe it is possible, regardless if we have a track record of incessant failures and falls.

- THE WORD: In Ephesians, while describing our weapon of attack and offense, it calls the word of God the sword of the Spirit. In Matthew while Jesus was being tempted, we see that he spoke quotations from Deuteronomy to the devil. Same way, for us to effectively defeat a manifestation of a fruit of our sinful nature, we have to be well acquainted with the word.
For me, I had to search out every scripture I could find that talked about sexual purity. And I spoke them to myself everyday. And whenever I felt the thought or stirring to masturbate, I would immediately speak out loud these scriptures. When Jesus was tempted, he spoke a scripture addressing that temptation to the enemy. Same way, when we are tempted, we speak a scripture addressing that temptation to the situation. We dont silently think it, we speak it out. Jesus said speak to the mountain. Jesus spoke to the fig tree, and the effect of his words withered the tree. We have to learn to SPEAK scriptures to situations. As long as our mouth is shut, the potency of the word is muffled.

- MOURN: One of the major mistakes we make is we expect that when we give up our favorite sin, we wouldnt miss it; that God will swoop in and fill the emptiness. Thats a lie! If we have enjoyed a particular sin for years, the moment we give it up, our sinful nature is going to ache for it. It is akin to losing a cherished thing. We will feel a sense of loss, and it is okay. We have to go thru the period of mourning. Failure to mourn the loss of our fav sin will result in a wicked cycle of searching for something to satiate the loss. I used to be a drug addict, and I did have to attend rehab and secular therapy. Part of what I learned there was, mourning the loss of using was a process I had to come to terms with, and embrace. Thats the same with giving up any sin we were hooked on. There's no short cut to it. Accept it that it "sucks" from the perspective of the flesh to not have your fav sin no more. But from the perspective of Christ, it is LIFE!!! We have to die to self to live in Christ. He who saves his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for Christs sake will gain it.

- FLEE: 1 Cor 6:18 "Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body". The instruction here is to FLEEEEE!!!! It doesnt say debate it, argue with it, or wrestle with it. It says flee. Flee means flee. We all have our triggers. For some, it is what they watch, others it is what they read, and to others, it is what they discuss, or who they discuss with. We gotta shut down whatever our trigger is. For me, my trigger was always the early hours of the morning (thats a male thing). So I had to always break the spell of silently sitting in the moment by offering myself to God as a sacrifice, since I cant run from my body's early morning reaction. 1 Cor 6:13b "The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also". My body was meant for the Lord, including my sexual organs. And the same God who raised Christ from the dead can equally raise my body from burning in lust, provided I offer it to him. Rom 12:1 "Therefore, I urge you brothers in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship". And this includes offering your sexual organs to God, especially in the heat of the moment, afterall our very body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

- REPENT: The first thing you learn in rehab is, relapse is part of your recovery. You cant identify how a situation makes you vulnerable until you are in a vulnerable situation. So if you fall, it isnt an excuse to wallow in the fall, and remain in the mud. Vent and do what you got to, but get up, and renew your mind in your conviction to live in victory over masturbation. Dont excuse and defend it. Call it what it is, accept and embrace the forgiveness of Christ, and reinforce your commitment to rise above masturbation thru commitment to and in the word, and continue pressing. But make sure you learn from the relapse. It would be foolishly self deluding to relapse, and not analyze the fall, and figure out where you were passive and submissive in giving in to sin.

Thats all folks. For my super spiritual folks who might feel this is inappropriate to discuss, my apologies, but I have to live true to the calling on my life :)
